Illegal immigrants have been caught building a new prison – including a Ukranian whose work permit allegedly ran out ten years ago.
Volodymyr Pidodvirnyy, 37, appeared at Flintshire magistrates court in Mold charged with having two fake Latvian driving licences.
The court heard he was one of several illegal workers caught working on the £212million Berwyn Prison in Wrexham when officials raided it on Friday.
Defence solicitor Stephen Edwards told the court that those who did not have false documents were taken to an immigration centre.
He added: “It’s quite ironic. It’s fair to say Wrexham custody suite looked like The United Nations when a large number of males were brought in.”
Mr Pidodvirnyy, from Manchester, did not apply for bail and will make a plea after his immigration status has been established, the court heard.
The new prison for lower risk category C prisoners will be big enough to hold around 2,000 men when it opens in February 2017.
HMP Berwyn has been named after the Berwyn Range of mountains locally, and work started on the state of the art facility in May last year.
