Midlands Anti-Expansion Network (MAEN) is a new and very active midlands-based group with an anti-racist abolitionist approach, focussed on resisting the mega-prisons in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire and in Glen Parva, Leicestershire. Since their launch in August 2018, MAEN have organised numerous film screenings in their local area and an event to present the Prison Island report, all with food and childcare facilities available. They produced a flyer and petition against the expansion of HMP Glen Parva, have done information stalls and flyered the residential area around the prison and have plans to do much more.
Plans for the coming months including a Birmingham Freedom School with interactive workshops around prison abolition, and a scaled down version of this at a cafe near HMP Glen Parva. All new members are welcome but as most of MAEN is currently based in Birmingham, they are particularly keen to hear from those based elsewhere in the midlands, particularly Northampton and Leicester, which are closer to the mega-prisons.
